A visit to the Orbost Secondary College earlier this month saw GELLEN Project Officers Don Shaw and Pam Waters working with 23 VCAL students on their employability skills.

Three activities were undertaken to encourage the students to explore what contribution they would make in a workplace, the importance of employability skills and a focus on teamwork.

A highlight was the Egg Drop Activity – students teamed up to design and build a structure to enable the egg to be dropped from a height of three metres so it wouldn’t break! This activity was all about each student’s contribution to their team, and how successfully they worked together (and not so much about the egg!)

The students also viewed a short video titled What do employers look for when employing staff? This informative video outlines what it is various employers are looking for when hiring a new employee. Thanks to Youth Central for use of video! You might also remember a similar video from GELLEN, highlighting local employers and their needs – you can view Work Ready Attitudes here.

The session concluded with each student making a short presentation to the group highlighting what they learned from the session, and any challenges they are looking forward to during 2019.

Many thanks to Dave Thexton and the VCAL students for hosting part of the GELLEN team for a great morning!
