The City Kids Experiencing Country Life program provides Year 5 and 6 students in metropolitan areas with the chance to experience rural life, discover more about where their food comes from, learn about the natural environment, and develop an understanding of the historical and contemporary role of regional and rural communities.

The four-day camps provide a range of rural experiences and practical activities that are fun to do, and that build individual confidence, practical skills and team work. The camps are also an ideal way to show city kids some of the career opportunities that are available in regional Victoria.

Thirty-three students and their teachers from Healesville Primary School’s at their camp at Coonawarra Farm Resort in East Gippsland.
As part of their experience, the students visited Bulmer Farms, a locally run family agribusiness in Lindenow growing lettuce, baby spinach, baby salad leaf and a range of broccoli varieties. At the farm, they toured the packing shed and saw vegetables being washed and packaged ready for delivery.

They learnt that the salad greens from the farm can end up on the menu at MacDonalds. A tour of the paddocks showed the broader range of employment opportunities in agriculture from farmers to forklift drivers, diesel mechanics to administration and business management. It was a great day and everyone really enjoyed themselves.
